Changes Of John Proctor Throughout The Play The Crucible

Christopher Pike once stated, “Nothing’s as it seems.” This quote is attributed to John Proctor from The Crucible. John Proctor, a Salem farm owner, is an example of John Proctor. He was respected and well liked. However, he had to endure some bumps in the road that changed his personality. John Proctor’s character changed due to events that forced him to question his beliefs, judgments and emotions.

John Proctor’s beginning is not good. He is depicted as unfaithful and weak. John Proctor tells Abigail that he feels guilty over his affair. Your spirit is a twisted mess of every single mistake in my life and I will never let it go. This quote shows John Proctor’s guilt for his affair and how he fears that his mistakes will haunt him forever.

John Proctors weakness became a problem when he was unable to control his temper and was aggressive towards his wife for being too cold. John Proctor told Elizabeth and his servant that he would whip him if he tried to leave the house again. That was the best evidence that he was violent and ill-tempered. John Proctor is now violently angry and irate because Elizabeth is his wife.

John Proctor was transformed after the play. He learned to love his family and became a more courageous man. John Proctor remarked that he has three children and how he can teach them how to behave in public. As he made his family’s lives difficult, he showed no fear and took responsibility. John Proctor changed because of the many events that he had to go through.

John Proctor made a change and became a hero for his town. He even died to save innocent lives. John Proctor’s emotions, beliefs and judgments were changed by major events in the play. John was initially weak and unfaithful. Elizabeth was cold and John changed. He then became violently ill-tempered and unfaithful. His morality and courage changed towards the end, making him a hero and courageous. John’s portrayal of John was a representation of the mental and physical struggles that he faced.
